Dietary requirements
All of our menu and the vast majority of our cakes are either naturally gluten free or vegan or can be made so with adaptations. We aim to be as inclusive as possible for all allergy requirements and take every care possible when baking and preparing food and drinks.
Having an allergy myself and coming from a family of various allergies I understand the importance of ensuring no cross contamination and being able to eat out confidently is such a big issue.
If you would like to discuss any allergy with us before visiting then please do contact us and we would be more than happy to be as inclusive as possible.
Come and take a moment out of life, be refreshed with not only great drinks and food but to leave feeling revived in every aspect.
About us
Since the age of 8 I knew that I wanted to run a cafe that was different to everyone else. I grew up baking for my large family, catering for all our various dietary needs and learning how to adapt recipes to improve and ensure no one missed out because of what they could or couldn’t eat.
Having studied catering at college to a degree level, I was running my own catering company for a few years before moving north, having kids and life generally took over! I spent 14 years in administration and management jobs honing different skills whilst the kids grew up. In 2017, 30 years after my first vision of a cafe, I fell in love with the premises at Market Place and as it was about to become vacant, took the plunge to transform it into a cafe, opening in May 2018. Lots of hard work later, we have now been running for nearly 5 years and love every second of it.

The building
The building itself is a magnificent piece of history, listed as early 16th Century it is steeped in classic features, including the old coal shoot into the store which is now our ‘hideaway’ and a 18th Century ‘William Smith Jnr’ original stove (interesting article about William Smith including details on the stove can be found on the Northern Echo website.. Almost 2 years ago we installed a new flue to the chimney and got the stove up and running again as a working fireplace which on a cold winter’s day is a little slice of cozy heaven with a hot chocolate and cream scone!
Delicious homemade cakes baked fresh every day. If you have a specific request and would like to order in advance then please do not hesitate to contact us accordingly.

Our forest in Tanzania
We partner with Sustainably Run Restaurants and have our own geo-tagged forest in Tanzania. You can purchase a tree for just £1.23 with your bill and it’s planted and geo-tagged as part of our forest.
You can view our ever growing forest here.
They plant fruit trees in rural communities to provide food and work alongside the farmers to teach them agronomy for a long lasting generational solution. And whilst we try our very best to keep our own carbon footprint to a minimum by sourcing the vast majority of our supplies from local businesses, every tree goes towards off setting our carbon footprint too.
What our customers say
Probably the best sausage roll in the world! Everything was lovely, soup and scone, busy for a good reason, keep up the good work!!
Lovely, quirky little place. Excellent service, great food!
Everything was excellent, from the staff to the quirky building and the food was delicious and good value.
It was an absolute haven, warm, welcoming and had one of the most delicious cheese scones and gorgeous coffee. I judge a cafe by its scones being a fussy food teacher and these were outstanding. Thank you.
